COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members are organizing a ‘Stop the Violence’ convoy in Montgomery after 52 homicides were recorded by Oct. 5. The convoy will urge residents to push for safer streets — a call backed by local River Region organizations.  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery Zoo will host its 2nd annual Zoo Brew Festival on October 19th—attendees can enjoy local brews and food from area vendors. The event promises a lively local experience at the zoo.  WSFA 12
  • The 37th Annual Holiday Market by the Junior League of Montgomery is running from October 16th to 18th at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl to support nonprofits that help women and families. Today brings a special Girls’ Night Out with a silent auction, wine pull, cash bar, and photo op with Santa (tickets cost $5 at the door or from a League member).  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Montgomery teen discovered his passion for dance in second grade and now his talent is taking him to national stages — a journey fueled by relentless practice and local support.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • All three Pike Road Schools playgrounds now include communication boards and inclusive swings to help every child communicate and play safely. School officials say these updates let students of all abilities connect with their peers—boosting confidence and ensuring more inclusive play.  WAKA 8
  • The Alabama Public Charter School Commission renewed contracts for Magic City Acceptance Academy in Homewood, LEAD Academy in Montgomery and Breakthrough Charter School in Perry County on Wednesday after evaluating performance and future plans. Magic City Acceptance Academy received a five-year renewal with a condition to stay in compliance with the state’s divisive concepts law — LEAD Academy was renewed for five years while Breakthrough Charter School received a three-year term amid concerns over timely reporting.  Alabama Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Steven Reed vetoed the city council’s unanimous resolution to help Jackson Hospital, with city clerk Brenda Blalock confirming she received the veto on Wednesday afternoon—his office has not yet released the required three reasons. The veto stops a nonbinding plan for potentially backing a $20 million loan amid growing financial concerns at the hospital.  WSFA 12
  • State leaders launched Alabama’s Department of Workforce on Capitol steps Thursday morning, consolidating job resources into one new agency as Gov. Ivey said the department will boost workforce participation & help Alabamians access job training and opportunities. Former Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed was appointed the first secretary and bipartisan support backed the move.  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office announced that the annual Halloween Spooktacular trunk or treat event—canceled earlier at Garrett Coliseum due to traffic concerns—will now be held at Paterson Field starting at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, offering families a safe option on Halloween evening.  AL.com
  • The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office hosted Montgomery Night Out at EastChase on Thursday to explain its work and show community partnerships in crime and drug prevention—deputies demonstrated preparedness with features like a helicopter landing in a live show of emergency readiness.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Montgomery's Jackson Hospital received new funding that increased its DIP loan from $22 million to $35 million with an added $15 million from Jackson Investment Group—county leaders will vote on further support Oct 21 to help keep it open until later this year.  WAKA 8
