COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Prattville YMCA held its 12th Great Grits Cookoff and Festival on a fall Saturday — hundreds of locals sampled grits from Barberitos, Hardees and other chefs while children enjoyed live music, vendors and fun activities; a 5K run raised scholarship funds for local families.  WAKA 8
  • Save Our Streets Montgomery has partnered with local barbershops to create a space where barbers use their chairs to discuss youth issues and community safety amid recent local crimes. Lee Giles of Freshline Everytime said his shop will offer resources such as GED and trades information— a call for more barbershop owners to join the initiative.  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery Humane Society introduced Pets of the Week featuring Carlos, a 2-month-old domestic shorthair kitten found alone and seeking a permanent home + Karl, a 2-month-old Terrier mix puppy born without a tail who needs to be near his favorite people. Both are available for adoption at the shelter.  WAKA 8
  • Dozens of Montgomery families attended the COVER Expo at the Chisholm Community Center next to the zoo to learn about health screenings, neighborhood associations, and school resources. Montgomery City Council members Marche Johnson and Julie Beard organized the event featuring special guest Holy Gabbanna—who turned his life around after a past in crime.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Birmingham Pies & Pints closed on October 20, leaving its Montgomery location as the only Alabama restaurant for the chain. The pizzeria, which opened in 2016 and once served pizza, sandwiches and salads with 36 taps, thanked the community on social media.  AL.com
  • Hyundai Montgomery is moving its dealership from Eastern Boulevard to Central Parkway and Carmichael Road near I-85, where it will open its largest Alabama facility by the end of the year with a new 50-bay, climate-controlled service hub—Genesis will launch its new dealership on the same property by the end of the first quarter of next year.  WSFA 12
  • Morris and Leslie Capp have taken over Chris’ Hotdogs, a century-old restaurant in Montgomery, just over a week after the new ownership was announced— they will keep the business running for local customers.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Chamber Music Organization celebrates 65 years with multiple concerts starting October 30th+ the series will feature chamber music performances showcasing local talent.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery Zoo hosted Zoo Brews and Food Festival on Sunday, featuring craft and domestic beers, wine, food and live music (a festival for local residents) (as reported by event details).  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alabama State Supt. Eric Mackey reported that nearly 5,800 public school students did not return this year—and about half of them are unaccounted for, with the rest in private schools or homeschool settings. The drop in enrollment will reduce the education budget by about $30 million and may lead to 500 fewer education jobs as retiring positions are not refilled.  WSFA 12
  • L.E.A.D. Academy Montgomery was unanimously renewed for five more years by the Alabama Public Charter School Commission, affirming its commitment to student-centered education in Montgomery. The renewal comes as the school builds on its STEM and social-emotional programs and prepares for its first graduating class next year—marking an important milestone.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new non-profit group called the Alabama Rural Hospital Foundation was announced last Wednesday to use members' expertise and a new tax incentive program to help keep rural hospitals open amid funding issues. The foundation’s board includes health and legislative leaders + it will work with state and federal programs to boost care access and support local growth.  Alabama Daily News
  • Wendy Jacobsen from the Samarian Counseling Center joined WFSA to discuss how healthy conflict resolution can reduce the effects of crime.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alabama replaced Miami as a top-four seed in the College Football Playoff based on Sunday's AP Top 25 — its 37 to 20 win over Tennessee pushed the team up and marked the first appearance on the bracket for Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt and BYU.  Alabama Daily News
