COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hope Inspired Ministries honored its donors on Thursday at the 'Hope Heals' event by showing how every contribution helps fund training programs that remove barriers for job seekers+ the nonprofit highlighted that a $2,500 student cost can generate a $70,000 community benefit. This event let attendees see firsthand how donations power essential workforce and support services.  WSFA 12
  • The DAS team volunteered at the Alabama Food Bank where they packed 6,250 meals for seniors—supporting local efforts to fight food insecurity. Their work highlighted a meaningful act of community help.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Local events include the Wetumpka Zombie Experience running through the end of October, former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron running for lieutenant governor in 2026, and Auburn hosting Oktoberfest on October 25—other highlights include a fall pumpkin patch at Choctofaula Ranch, a forthcoming Christmas Market in Prattville, and ASU’s Theatre and Dance offering The Living Score from October 30 to November 1.  WSFA 12

  • McDonald’s opened a new restaurant in Pike Road near the corner of Vaughn and Pike roads on October 23rd at 10:30 a.m.—after months of construction and a soft opening earlier in the week, it offered the first 50 customers free meal gift boxes as part of the Merry Corners Center shopping center development.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • The new book 'Alabama Hope'—which features 60 synagogues and churches representing different denominations—celebrates Alabama’s rich faith heritage.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAB opened its new 175,000-square-foot genomic medicine and data sciences building — featuring an iconic double-helix design — on Oct. 23rd at its campus on Seventh Avenue South between 19th and 20th streets. The state provided a $50 million investment for the project, which will support research, clinical care and education in precision medicine and data sciences.  AL.com
  • AUM chancellor has been elevated to GSC board president—he will now help guide the athletics conference where the Warhawks compete. This new role adds to his responsibilities in shaping the future of the conference.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Montgomery’s New Hope Missionary Baptist Church is raising funds for those battling cancer and will hold a check presentation to the Cancer Wellness Foundation next Wednesday. Chairwoman Earnestine Hinkle—a cancer survivor—said her personal journey drives the church’s effort to support patients.  WAKA 8
