COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will come to Montgomery starting October 27 to help gather food donations for the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, which serves 35 counties by hosting events at local libraries, a game at Montgomery Biscuits, and a celebration at Common Bond Brewers.  WAKA 8
  • St. John's AME Church is hosting its fall festival this weekend—offering local community members a chance to celebrate autumn with a festive event.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Prattville family has filled their yard with handmade spider decorations for 25 years and now shows 35 spiders (each made with 288 PVC legs) to invite neighbors to stop by. The Askew family lets local kids help customize the spiders (at their home on Mill Ridge Court off Cobbs Ford Road) as part of a long-running local tradition.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery Symphony Orchestra — set to perform Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for Halloween — will offer a magical show that brings the classic tale to life in Montgomery this festive season. The performance is expected to attract families and fans who appreciate a unique twist on a well-loved story.  WSFA 12
  • The Alabama Fried Pickle Festival is scheduled for this weekend—promising fried pickles, food vendors and live music for local families. Organizers expect the event to offer a fun day of unique flavors and community celebration.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Statues honoring Rosa Parks and Helen Keller will be unveiled at the Alabama Capitol to honor the contributions of these American heroines who once called this state home.  WSFA 12
  • The federal government shutdown will continue into next week as senators did not meet on Oct.24—leaving about 110,000 Alabamians relying on WIC. Dr. Karen Landers said residents should keep using and applying to WIC while officials work to secure extra funds and the Senate is set to meet on Oct.27.  WSFA 12

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Southern Union State Community College hosted its Fridays in the Kitchen event on Oct. 24 where a special Beef Chili Con Queso was prepared in the college kitchen. The cooking demo invited local food lovers to try a new recipe—showcasing the college’s creative culinary approach.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • The annual Magic City Classic is underway and Alabama Highway Patrol officers are patrolling highways to keep traffic safe as more than 70,000 fans travel to Birmingham—officials said they will clear roads if crashes occur.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama, now ranked No.4 after four straight wins over top SEC teams, will face South Carolina today at Williams-Brice Stadium—defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and quarterback Ty Simpson said the team is focused on the game despite South Carolina’s rough season and key player struggles, including a limited quarterback performance by LaNorris Sellers. South Carolina, missing offensive tackle Cason Henry, has struggled throughout the season and hopes to spark an upset in its homecoming game.  Alabama Daily News
