COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Montgomery Lions Club held its annual Chili Cookoff at Riverwalk Stadium on October 26, where dozens of chefs competed in various chili categories to support local nonprofits. Acme Brick won top honors in the amateur division—while Vintage Year and Montgomery Whitewater earned awards for restaurant chili and People’s Choice, respectively.  WAKA 8
  • The Bell Road YMCA will host its third annual Beat Breast Cancer Rally to show how small lifestyle changes can help fight breast cancer — the event will offer practical tips for community members. Local organizers expect the rally to boost health awareness and encourage everyday actions that reduce risks.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery’s Fried Pickle Festival at Garrett Coliseum drew hundreds on Saturday and Sunday as visitors sampled pickle-flavored lemonade, watermelon and cotton candy along with vendors and kid-friendly attractions—such as inflatables, face painting and a petting zoo with a baby kangaroo. Organizer Shannon Wright said the event was planned after seeing similar festivals succeed elsewhere.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four Alabama State University students will leave Houston at midnight to attend AfroTech 2025—one of the country's largest tech conferences celebrating Black excellence—after raising funds and securing $3,500 in Premier Passes. They are still seeking $4,000 to cover housing, meals, and transportation.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • If the government shutdown lasts into November, more than 750,000 Alabamians who rely on SNAP may miss food benefits next month—lawmakers and advocates are urging the USDA to use emergency funds despite legal limits. Local food banks are gearing up to help but warn they cannot fully replace the aid if a government deal is not reached.  Alabama Daily News
  • Statues of Rosa Parks and Helen Keller were unveiled Friday on the Capitol grounds—these monuments, the first honoring women, were approved in 2019 to mark the impact of civil rights and disability advocacy. Parks is shown boarding a bus near the Jefferson Davis statue, and the Keller statue invites visitors to reflect on overcoming challenges.  Alabama Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Bell Road YMCA hosted the third annual Beat Breast Cancer Rally—an event focused on prevention during Breast Cancer Awareness Month—where local residents learned that small lifestyle changes, like a plant-based diet and regular exercise, can lower cancer risks. It also provided a free 12-week Lift Strong workout program for those in recovery or treatment.  WSFA 12
