COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Judd Davis reported on news from Paul Finebaum and County Road 12, and the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile will soon return to Montgomery to support the Alabama Food Bank in its local food drive. Montgomery County also received $2.25M in grants that local leaders say will lower crime and improve safety.  WSFA 12
  • The Oscar Mayer Weinermobile will roll into Montgomery this week to help the Alabama Food Bank by turning each stop into a local food drive — officials say the mission will fight hunger and spread smiles among residents.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery’s historic Capri Theatre announced leadership changes — longtime director Martin McCaffery will step down at the end of the year while Adrian Lee Bush is set to become organization director and Richard Sherman will serve as theatre director. The new roles will begin in November to ensure a smooth transition with current staff.  WAKA 8
  • The Atagi Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored local WWII hero Helen Lattal with the Women in American History Award at a meeting on October 16th at 9:30 a.m. in Prattville—her son Paul Whaley II accepted the award in recognition of her service as a secretary with the 8th Air Force where she prepared awards for Captains Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart.  Elmore Autauga News
  • Capri Theatre will host its first poster sale in over a decade — the event will run from November 1st to 2nd, offering collectors and fans a rare chance to find historic posters.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alabama State University got a record $38 million donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, ASU President Dr. Quinton T. Ross said Monday— it is the largest gift in the school’s 158-year history and highlights its role in advancing higher learning.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama State University is hosting Veterans Appreciation Week from November 6-11 — a series of events planned to honor veterans for their service.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daylight saving time ends Nov. 2 at 2 a.m.—clocks will fall back one hour to bring more daylight to the morning, and standard time continues until DST resumes on March 8, 2026.  AL.com
  • House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter and Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger said a new report shows drug overdoses in Alabama fell by 30% over the past year. The Oversight Commission on Alabama Opioid Settlement Funds spent $81 million on programs and gave over 88,000 Naloxone kits to first responders + supported efforts to help people get treatment.  Alabama Daily News
  • Ashley King, a single mother in Montgomery who suffers from a painful condition, relies on SNAP benefits to feed her family of three. The benefits will be suspended on November 1 because the government shutdown continues—threatening food access for thousands of local families.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dementia Friendly Alabama held its first Halloween Crawl today as part of its monthly memory café for those living with dementia and their caregivers—participants made Trick or Treat bags, got face paintings, and enjoyed treats from building offices to raise awareness ahead of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.  WAKA 8
  • A new report shows overdoses in Alabama decreased by 30% year-over-year after funds from the opioid settlement helped provide free Narcan kits + fentanyl test strips and cut opioid prescriptions by 40%. Officials said they will continue their efforts + adjust strategies until overdoses fall to zero.  WSFA 12
