COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery leaders will host a community food event to support families hit by federal cuts — the gathering will feature food, fellowship, and a focus on resilience.  The Montgomery Independent
  • WSFA celebrated 70 years by honoring Verdelle Jefferson—its longest-serving employee who worked 50 years and helped keep the station running strong. Her dedication and vibrant personality shaped local broadcasting over decades.  WSFA 12
  • Johnson Abernathy Gratez High School’s resource center opened its food pantry today to help local families access food when needed—offering crucial support for parents seeking assistance.  WSFA 12
  • Pike Road Schools held a one day food drive Tuesday where all four school campuses collected donations to help families during the busy holiday season—donated food items were given to Woodland Church Food Pantry amid a pause in SNAP benefits. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery Police Academy held its graduation ceremony today at the Church of the Highlands — marking a key milestone for officers ready to serve the community.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama Public Television officials said during a recent meeting that if the network drops PBS on November 18, it will lose millions in funding, 90% of its educational programming, and almost all of its 23,894 members. Staff is now gathering details to replace PBS services — including video players, media libraries, and cloud storage — while political disagreements add pressure to the decision.  AL.com
  • Gov. Kay Ivey joined local leaders in Wilcox County to celebrate progress on Alabama’s Middle-Mile Fiber Network, which now reaches all 67 counties. The project, funded by state and federal dollars (after 8 years of work) will finish construction in February (after crossing the J. Lee Long Bridge) to improve internet access statewide.  WSFA 12
  • Today the Heart of Alabama Food Bank thanked Governor Kay Ivey for providing $2 million in emergency funding to help Alabama families in need — the funds will support urgent local relief efforts.  The Montgomery Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Medical Association of the State of Alabama and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama announced improvements to the prior authorization process for doctors, eliminating artificial intelligence for denials + establishing a fully electronic system that shows treatment criteria and exempts trusted physicians from repeat approvals for chronic care.  Alabama Daily News
  • Jackson Hospital's board and new CEO said the hospital will need $293 million in funding by the end of the year—money required to support its operations. Leaders plan to seek the necessary support from funding sources in the coming weeks.  WSFA 12
