COMMUNITY NEWS

  • YMCA of Greater Montgomery is waiving membership fees for furloughed and unpaid federal workers affected by the shutdown, offering free access to wellness programs for current and new members on a month-to-month basis. Federal workers must show proof of furlough at any branch to receive the offer.  WAKA 8
  • The City of Montgomery and its Emergency Management Agency are asking for donations and volunteers as they prepare for the season's first cold blast of air. The warming center may open at The Crump Center — 1751 Congressman Dickinson Drive — with volunteer roles including greeting guests, distributing supplies and ensuring safety, and the first opportunity is on November 9.  WAKA 8
  • Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless is holding One Night Without a Bed in Montgomery to draw attention to nearly 900 people living without shelter each night—organizers aim to boost community action through the event.  WSFA 12
  • Southern Union State Community College launched its new cooking series 'Fridays in the Kitchen: Land & Sea Gumbo' at its college kitchen—local chefs blend land and sea flavors to create unique gumbo recipes. The series will offer hands-on cooking demos each Friday.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Alexis Thomas opened The Battlegrounds, an indoor/outdoor paintball field, after four years of hard work and became the first African American woman to own one in Alabama. The family-run venue at 859 Clayton Street offers glow in the dark games and safe play for all ages + many fun options indoors and outdoors.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. government shutdown that began on Oct. 1 has delayed research funding for projects at universities such as Auburn, where Professor Luke Oeding said he cannot move forward with new presentations until funding returns—forcing researchers to adjust their plans. The Senate meets today at 12 p.m. Eastern Time to try to restore the support needed for these projects.  WSFA 12
  • Lt. Gen. Daniel H. Tulley took command of Air University on November 7 during a change of command ceremony, and he now serves as commander and president of the institution.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Stanhope Elmore's boys and girls cross country teams ran at the Class 6A Section 2 meet in Auburn (where Logan Barnes won for the boys and the girls finished second overall) and will advance to the state championship meet (today in Danville) on strong individual efforts. Coach Bianca Bishop praised the teams’ performances that helped secure their spots.  Elmore Autauga News
  • Local high school teams played in Week 12 football games on Thursday and Friday — highlights for each matchup were available online. The Fever season kept fans excited with close scores and standout plays.  WSFA 12
