COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alabama SpiritHorse—a nonprofit that uses horseback riding therapy for children with special needs—will host a dinner and auction to raise funds and support its programs. The event aims to increase community awareness and secure resources for future therapy services.  WSFA 12
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama shopped for more than $1,000 in toys at Walmart Supercenter on Chantilly Parkway—this purchase helped fill the toy vault at Shoppes at EastChase—and the drive will benefit the Salvation Army of Montgomery by providing gifts to registered families before Christmas.  WAKA 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters battled a fire on Monday evening at Simply Southern Cafe on the 3400 block of McGehee Road—located near LAMP High School, as flames were seen coming from the roof.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new federal law lowers the allowed THC in hemp products and has prompted concern from local retailers such as Your CBD Store in Montgomery, where manager Laurie Carrington said over 60% of products may be affected — industry experts report that more than 90% of hemp-derived products will see changes. The rule will take effect in about one year — business owners now await further guidelines.  WSFA 12
  • Entrepreneur Kenya Vinson launched Southlawn Coffee Company today— a premium specialty coffee brand in West Montgomery aimed at empowering the local community through a strong focus on culture and craftsmanship.  The Montgomery Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hilltop Public House held a ribbon cutting on Monday to launch Miracle at Hilltop, its festive holiday cocktail bar offered for the third year and running daily through the end of December. The venue closes at 3 p.m.—reopening two hours later to serve a unique cocktail menu available only during pop-up hours with table reservations offered Wednesday through Saturday.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alabama’s new state and federal school report cards show that many high-poverty schools in Montgomery are struggling as more teachers work under emergency certificates, with some schools reporting over half their staff uncertified. Parents in priority schools can transfer their children, and districts must provide transportation+ giving local families extra options before Jan. 1.  Alabama Daily News
  • Teacher Rebecca Abrams—who has taught gifted students for nearly 30 years—introduces hands-on learning at Holtville Elementary School to boost practical education for advanced students.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery Police Department held a graduation ceremony for its new class after they completed training. Officials said the event honored the graduates as they begin their careers in policing.  WSFA 12
  • Today at 10 a.m., the Alabama Educational Television Commission is meeting to discuss ending its long-standing partnership with PBS—funding cuts have led to a potential loss of over $3 million and long-time viewers are urging officials to maintain the service. The commission will rely on written feedback as audience members have already sent emails and letters voicing their concerns.  AL.com
