COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Millbrook Chamber of Commerce named the Heart of Alabama Food Bank nonprofit of the year yesterday (Dec. 5) at its annual luncheon, recognizing its work serving 35 counties and local pantries with collected donations in support.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery's Freewill Missionary Baptist Church is set to mark its 60th anniversary with community celebrations. The milestone honors decades of faith and service in the local area.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Winn-Dixie is pulling out of Alabama, closing its Sturbridge + Vaughn Road store in the next few days and the Mobile Highway location early January; additional stores have converted to Piggly Wiggly Food for Less or Aldi, while Renfroe’s Market will open in Eufaula on Dec. 17.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary in Montgomery this weekend — it was founded in Anniston in 1972 and moved in 1985 to a $21.5 million performing arts complex. The official event is on Sunday, Dec. 7.  WAKA 8
  • Mount Zion AME Zion Church held a preview of its Memorial Annex on Dec. 5 in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The restored site (costing $1.5 million) preserves the historic church basement where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was elected.  WAKA 8
  • The Southern Youth Leadership Development Institute announced plans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott with an event highlighting this historic moment — details on timing and location will soon be shared in Montgomery.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey's office said that Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mailed over two million books to young readers statewide since 2023. The program serves children in all 67 counties and aims to boost enrollment from 106,000 to 193,000 kids.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Steven L. Reed and Urban League CEO William A. Barnes announced a new partnership to expand services in workforce development, housing counseling, education, health & small business support in Montgomery. They will hold a press conference today at 2:30 p.m. at City Hall.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Montgomery residents shared ideas for neighborhood improvements during a meeting at Bertha Williams Library on Dec. 5 in Nixon and Graetz. Council member Andrew Szymanski said residents suggested upgrades to sidewalks, crosswalks, and trails that may start early next year (local input drove the planning).  WAKA 8
