- ➤ A new storm shelter opened in Flatwood three years after a deadly tornado — offering safe refuge for local residents. Community officials said it is now ready for use. WSFA 12

- ➤ A Westside family is restoring a legacy by planning to open Fresh Greens Market (opening 2026) to offer fresh produce, bread, and eggs in a local food desert. The co-owners (with roots to the 1940s) said the market will serve elders and children. WSFA 12
- ➤ WSFA named longtime anchor Sally Pitts as its News Director on Dec. 8 in Montgomery — she will continue anchoring Alabama Live! and WSFA 12 News until Jan. 4, marking a leadership shift at the station. Montgomery Chamber

- ➤ YouthBuild Montgomery is recruiting 18- to 24-year-olds without a diploma for a pre-apprenticeship program funded by a $1.5 million grant. The program offers high school equivalency, construction and advanced manufacturing training, leadership, and community service in Montgomery (36104, 36105, 36107, 36108, 36110, 36111, 36116). - ➤ Huntingdon President Anthony Leigh was elected on Tuesday to serve a three-year term on the SACSCOC Board of Trustees at the annual meeting in Nashville. He will represent Alabama colleges with a student focus across hundreds of southern institutions. Montgomery Chamber
- ➤ ScholarCHIPS, a nonprofit that aids students with incarcerated parents, helped Tuskegee University nursing graduate Tomia Jackson complete her degree this past spring (her mother found the scholarship link on a jail tablet). The program partnered with Securus Technologies to reach 550,000 people and plans to expand its support. WSFA 12
- ➤ Alabama State University band director Dr. James Oliver, who led the Mighty Marching Hornets for 26 years, announced he will retire next year. His work — growing the band from 110 to 330 members — shaped countless students’ futures. WSFA 12

- ➤ Montgomery City Council approved the acquisition of a downtown Molton Street property for $5.5 million to pave the way for a $100 million convention center. The property is set to close on Thursday amid demolition and environmental cleanup plans, with the nearby bus transfer station to be relocated. WSFA 12
