COMMUNITY NEWS

  • River Region United Way and the Salvation Army partnered Tuesday to aid families displaced by the Woodley Terrace fire (which claimed three lives, including two children) by collecting clothing, shoes, and household items. Donations can be dropped off at the Salvation Army at 3460 Carter Hill Rd.  WSFA 12
  • Interfaith Montgomery will lead its 3rd annual interfaith service on Sunday, Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian & community members are invited to join a public gathering celebrating unity.  The Montgomery Independent
  • Community members held a balloon release to honor those affected by the deadly fire at Woodley Terrace Apartments on Dec. 21, uniting neighbors in calm remembrance—bringing solace to those in mourning.  WSFA 12

  • Jackson Hospital has extra time to secure remaining funds for its $293 million restructuring plan after a judge approved an extension to search for money until the end of January & the hospital has already secured about $200 million and aims to cover the gap with Blue Cross Blue Shield.  WSFA 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Jefferson County is set to redevelop Hallmark Farm into the Alabama Farm Center using an $11 million state grant to reclaim a 500-acre former mining site; the project will create 850 jobs and host rodeos, livestock shows, concerts + more.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey announced on Dec. 29 that Alabama secured more than $203 million for the Rural Health Transformation Program to boost rural health improvements. The funds will enhance local health services in many remote areas (including parts near Montgomery) to better care for residents.  The Montgomery Independent

  • Tide star Qua Russaw said he is inspired by a young cancer patient he met in the offseason who is fighting hard. He will use that energy to drive his push for a title as his team prepares for upcoming games.  WSFA 12
