CRIME NEWS

  • A Montgomery man was fatally shot on Thursday around 7:20 a.m. in the 700 block of Havelock Lane near North Burbank Drive — police say 23 year old Shaquille Davis died and no suspects are in custody.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Jeremy M. Carr, a chemistry instructor at Central Alabama Community College, represented the school at the American Chemical Society’s Blue Ribbon Panel in Washington, D.C., from February 21st to 23rd (the meeting discussed the possibility of extending accreditation recognition to two-year colleges).  Elmore Autauga News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new bill requires independent pharmacies be paid at least their medication costs plus a fee and passed the Senate committee Wednesday—Senate Bill 252, with 28 co-sponsors, could receive a full Senate vote today.  Alabama Daily News
  • State lawmakers approved a bipartisan bill on March 20 that gives state employees and teachers up to eight weeks maternity leave and two weeks paternity leave after a birth, stillbirth or miscarriage. The legislation now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey for her final signature after she endorsed the plan in February.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery is hosting a series of events to mark the 60th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March (a key moment in civil rights history) and will feature activities to honor the demonstration.  The Montgomery Independent
  • The House Ways and Means Education approved a bill granting paid parental leave to educators and state employees effective July 1 while another panel backed a measure that changes high-school athletic counts for schools with many English learners. In addition, a second committee approved a bill that makes computer science a graduation requirement for the class of 2030-31.  Alabama Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alabama Department of Public Health investigated after an unvaccinated child traveling through central Alabama tested positive for measles on March 9-10—officials said the child's contact with others was low risk. They urged everyone to be up to date on their measles vaccinations.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Auburn beat Alabama State 83 to 63 on Thursday in the NCAA Tournament with Miles Kelly scoring 23 points and making seven three pointers while Johni Broome added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Tigers will face Creighton on Saturday for a chance to reach the Sweet 16 — fans across Alabama will watch closely.  Alabama Daily News
