COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama turned 20 and has given nearly three-quarters of a million dollars each year to help local schools, food banks and cultural events (since 2005). The company is holding a food drive for the Heart of Alabama Food Bank to boost community support (a sign of its ongoing commitment).  WAKA 8
  • Sweet Creek Farm Market hosted its 7th annual Spring Chicken Festival—an event that continues a time-honored local tradition.  WSFA 12
  • Former WSFA anchor Bob Howell died after an extended illness, marking more than 32 years of trusted service that began in high school and continued with key assignments in Montgomery—funeral arrangements are pending. He was known for his calm delivery and mentorship of future broadcasters.  WSFA 12
  • St. John’s Episcopal Church will hold its fourth annual 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' event today to honor fallen military servicemembers over Memorial Day weekend. The ceremony begins at 12 p.m. with a short message from Rev. Dr. Duncan Johnston and a Maxwell Air Force Base servicemember speech — community-submitted names will be read aloud as the bell tolls followed by a complimentary barbecue lunch.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southern Poverty Law Center hosted its 'Art is Activism' block party to celebrate artists—attendees enjoyed a creative community event.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Alabama parole board released proposed new guidelines that weigh an inmate’s original crime and behavior more heavily, making parole recommendations tougher. The public can submit comments on the changes (via the Bureau of Pardons and Paroles website) until July 4 (as required by state law).  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Troy men’s baseball lost to Southern Mississippi in the Sun Belt tournament after senior Chase Nelson made his first start, pitching 6.2 innings with six strikeouts while Sean Darnell’s RBI double provided the only run. The Trojans will learn their NCAA Tournament fate on Monday + look to improve their play in future games.  WSFA 12
